The Sigma Kappa sorority is dedicated to creating an environment in which your daughter can grow into a more respectable, outgoing, and intelligent young woman while upholding our values.
Here are some frequently asked questions from potential members!
What will being in a sorority do for me?
- Leadership opportunities
- Life long friendships
- Opportunity to give back to the community through service
- Emphasis on scholarship
- Social Opportunities
- Everlasting memories
- Networking opportunities to connect with national chapter members from across the country and internationally
What if I have trouble choosing between certain chapters?
Difficult decisions are a common dilemma. Potential new members, however, shouldn’t look at this as a problem. Most women would probably be happy in several sororities on campus. Besides, keep in mind that sororities have to make decisions too. Think carefully and look objectively at what each sorority has to offer. A sorority should be a second home, a place where you feel totally comfortable and welcome. It shouldn’t be a popularity contest. Your intuition, experiences at each party, personal goals, and desires should guide you to the group that is right for you.
What is the time commitment like?
There is definitely a time commitment, but there are also so many benefits, like leadership and networking opportunities, academic support, and lifelong friendships! As a chapter, we believe that you get out what you put in, so we encourage our sisters to get involved not just in our chapter, but in other organizations on campus as well.
Some of the events we hold are optional, but our Founder's Day celebration in the Fall and our weekly chapter meetings are mandatory. Because we value academics highly and believe that academics come first, we also monitor members grades to ensure they are on top of their school work. We have many opportunities to play intramural sports in the Spring and Fall semesters, where we compete with and against other chapters! We hold events supporting our philanthropies each semester, and we also participate in other chapter's philanthropy events. We have many volunteering and service opportunities throughout the Spring and Fall semesters, which you can read more about on our Philanthropy page!
What are the financial responsibilities?
Sigma Kappa is a not-for-profit corporation and relies on the national fees from its members to finance yearly operating expenses and chapter services. You can read more about those fees on our national website. Your daughter will be provided with a detailed breakdown of all the financial responsibilities should she join our chapter. We understand that it can be overwhelming at first, but it is definitely manageable. If needed, payment plans can be arranged between a member and our Vice President of Finance.
